Pedestrian Struck While Crossing Galloway Highway: Police

The 82-year-old was not in a crosswalk when he crossed Route 9 into Historic Smithville and was hit by a car, police said.

GALLOWAY, NJ — An 82-year-old man was badly injured after being struck by a car while crossing the highway in South Jersey, police said.

The crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. on Nov. 29 in the area of Route 9 and Moss Mill Road in Galloway, police said.

A 1999 Buick Century driven by a 64-year-old Lumberton man was heading south on Route 9. At the same time, an 82-year-old Wall man was crossing Route 9 from the east side of the roadway towards Historic Smithville, police said.

The Wall man was hit by the Buick as he crossed, police said. He was not in a crosswalk.

The pedestrian was seriously injured and hospitalized, while the driver was uninjured, police said.

Galloway police are reminding residents that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility.

"Pedestrians are encouraged to cross only at marked crosswalks, wear visible clothing during evening hours, and avoid stepping into the roadway from between parked cars or obstructed areas," police said. "Drivers are urged to remain alert, eliminate distractions, slow down in pedestrian-heavy areas, and be prepared to yield to individuals who are crossing legally."

The crash remains under investigation.
