1 In 5 NJ Hospital Beds Occupied By COVID-19 Patients: See Where

Could more NJ hospitals could reach 100 percent capacity? See the latest coronavirus numbers at your local hospital.

NEW JERSEY — About out of every five hospital beds in New Jersey is occupied by a patient being treated for the coronavirus, according to the latest federal data.

And if the numbers keep growing, more hospitals could run out of beds for all of their patients as the second wave of the coronavirus crisis continues to impact the Garden State.

Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel and South Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin are among the highest, where the latest federal data shows 35 percent and 34 percent, respectively, of inpatient beds filled with COVID-19 patients (see the list of hospitals below).

The high COVID percentages impact the hospitals' total capacity. Indeed, Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel and South Ocean Medical Center have filled 91 and 73 percent of total inpatient beds, respectively, according to the latest data.

At all New Jersey hospitals, an average of almost 20 percent of all inpatients beds are being occupied by COVID-19 patients, according to the data. More than 72 percent of the state's total inpatient beds are filled.

The US Department of Health and Human Services provided the "new, more granular, data release" this past month to show how COVID-19 is impacting hospitals and local communities across the country. The latest data comes from the last week of December.

"With this data release, how hospitals are impacted by COVID-19 will be shown on a per-hospital basis, allowing researchers, policymakers, and others to have greater insights into local COVID-19 response efforts," according to the department.

While there is no clear threshold, NPR, in a recent report, cited hospital experts saying that anything above 10 percent capacity of beds filled with COVID-19 patients is concerning and anything above 20 percent represents "extreme stress" for a hospital.

But Dawn Thomas, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health, said the "concerning" point depends on total capacity at the hospital.

"Hospitals inform the department when they go on divert and the divert could be for specific services or departments of the hospitals such as the emergency department," she said.

Gov. Phil Murphy said the number of hospitalizations has remained fairly stable amid the second wave of the coronavirus even as some facilities are near or at capacity.

"That's the one thing that we cannot allow, to be overrun," Murphy said.

During his Monday news conference, Murphy said the number of hospitalizations has been in the range of 3,400 to 3,800 in recent weeks. While that's 10 times the August number, he noted that New Jersey peaked at 8,270 when the coronavirus first hit in the spring.

He also noted that the Garden State has had in the range of 600 intensive care unit beds being used while the peak was 2,080.

Murphy said New Jersey is working hard to prevent the issues facing Los Angeles County in California, or some other states, "where you've got literally people in beds in waiting rooms in the emergency room and being treated in that forum."

Murphy said the restrictions he's imposed on gathering limits, indoor dining and schools are helping to prevent New Jersey's hospitals from facing the same consequences.

As coronavirus cases and hospitalizations have risen in recent months, New Jersey health officials have also urged residents to stay home, wear masks and observe social distancing in order to curb the spread of the virus and keep patients out of rapidly filling hospitals.

"Thank God that is not happening here," he said. "But that's the one thing people ask us all the time: Are you reconsidering (reopening) this or reconsidering that? Those are the numbers that we cannot allow ourselves to get overrun by."

In its data release, the US Department of Health and Human Services notes that some hospitals might have additional capacity to treat COVID-19 patients, while others lack that capacity. Using this new data, the public will have access to hospital-specific COVID-19 numbers "to understand hyper-localized community impacts."

"This new level of transparency and increased access will accelerate COVID-19 insights and understanding," the department said.

Communities will be empowered to guide their decisions about building operations, closures, and openings, the department said. City and county officials who do not already have comprehensive access to this type of hospital-level data can now be informed by regional trends and individual hospital capacity.

Some have provided creative ways to get the data to the public. NPR, using analysis from the University of Minnesota's COVID-19 Hospitalization Tracking Project, also built a tool that shows hospital-by-hospital information. The numbers were updated through December. You can access the NPR tool here
