Attorney Vows Appeal in Clementi Spy Case Verdict

Attorney for Dharun Ravi says he will appeal conviction

The attorney for Dharun Ravi, convicted Friday in the Rutgers spycam case tied to the death of Ridgewood resident Tyler Clementi, said that he plans to appeal the jury's verdict. 

"Rest assured that at the appropriate time an appeal will be filed challenging all of the issues that we raised before the trial and during trial," Attorney Steven D. Altman said in an email.

Altman did not elaborate, saying that he would release a statement next week.

"Right now I am just dealing with the emotions that everyone involved with the Ravi family and the defense experienced and continue to experience with the verdict," he wrote.

Ravi, 20, was of bias intimidation and invasion of privacy and faces a possible ten year prison sentence.

The jury agreed with prosecutors that Ravi targeted Clementi, his 18-year-old roommate, because Clementi was gay. Ravi showed little emotion after hearing the jury determine his fate, ultimately convicting him on 24 of 35 charges contained in 15 counts.

Clementi days after discovering Ravi attempted to view him in a romantic encounter with another man, inviting others to watch at a 'viewing party.' He was not charged with contributing to Clementi's death.

Ravi is scheduled to be sentenced Monday, May 21. He remains free on bail.
