GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — After six years on the run, a Gloucester Township man accused of sexually assaulting a child and fleeing to Mexico was arrested, officials said Wednesday.

Brian J. Rivers Jr. sexually abused a child in Gloucester Township between 2012 and 2018, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office (CCPO). He had evaded authorities since May 2019, when he was charged with 13 sexual offenses.

A years-long investigation from the U.S. Marshal Service revealed Rivers's location. On Feb. 11, U.S. Marshals and Mexican authorities arrested him in Puebla, Mexico.

Juan Mattos Jr., U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey, called the arrest "a victory for all of our state, local, and international partners" who spent years searching for Rivers.

"The coordination between our task force partners in the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and international counterparts demonstrates the power of persistence, teamwork, and the unyielding pursuit of justice," Mattos said in a statement.

In 2019, Rivers was charged with:

  • first-degree aggravated sexual assault (two counts)
  • second-degree sexual assault (two counts)
  • second-degree endangering the welfare of a child (three counts)
  • third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact (six counts)

His detention hearing is scheduled for Friday at the Camden County Hall of Justice.
