Democrats Hold Commanding Leads In Gloucester Twp. Elections

The independent candidates ran under the 'United For Change' banner, seeking to upend the Dems' domination of local politics.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Democratic incumbents hold substantial leads in Gloucester Township's mayor and Township Council races as Election Day approaches midnight.

Mayor David Mayer holds 60.9 percent of the votes in the mayoral election, while independent challenger Keith Gibbons has about 38.8 percent.

Incumbent council candidates Carolyn Grace, Helen Albright Troxell and Ciri Castro, Jr. hold similar leads against the three independent candidates.

All of the independent candidates ran under the "United For Change" banner, seeking to upend the Democratic Party's domination in local politics.

Last year, Gibbons ran a successful campaign for voters to reject the township's sale of its wastewater system to New Jersey American Water. Four of five voters opposed the sale in a referendum.

But as it stands, the Democrats would maintain the mayorship and all council seats.

It's unclear how complete the vote totals are. All election results remain unofficial until certified by the Camden County Clerk's Office on a later date.
