Man Beaten To Death With Club At Camden Co. Apartment Complex: Prosecutor

The victim died 2 months after the assault, and the suspect was on the run for months after, authorities said.

LINDENWOLD, NJ — A Camden County resident was arrested Monday on murder charges five months after he bludgeoned a man and three months after the victim succumbed to his injuries, authorities said.

Wilmer A. Velasquez-Orellans beat a man with a "club-like device" June 13 at a Lindenwold apartment complex, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. He was charged with assault and arrested that day, but he was released from jail with conditions on June 18.

The victim — Alvaro I. Reyes-Rizo, 42, of Lindenwold — was hospitalized after the incident. He died from his injuries Aug. 13 at Cooper University Hospital, authorities said.

Velasquez-Orellans, 37, of Lindenwold, was charged with first-degree murder the next day. A regional fugitive task force of the U.S. Marshals Service arrested him Monday.

He is also facing weapons charges.

The suspect's attorney, George S. Yacoubian, Jr., declined comment to Patch.

Police were dispatched just before 5 a.m. June 13 for a reported assault at the Pinewood Estates apartment complex on the 500 block of East Gibbsboro Road, authorities said. Officers found Reyes-Rizo suffering from a head injury.

Surveillance footage captured the suspect striking the victim with a club-like weapon, authorities said.

Velasquez-Orellans is jailed at the Camden County Correctional Facility, with a pretrial detention hearing set for Friday.
