Man Who Strangled Ex-Girlfriend To Death After Breakup Gets Sentenced In South Jersey

MILLVILLE, NJ — A South Jersey man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend shortly after she ended the relationship.

Steven Gonzalez, of Millville, strangled the victim in July 2023 and left a note indicating the breakup was his motive, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office.

The woman was identified with the initials T.C., since the prosecutor's office typically withholds the names of homicide victims in domestic cases.

On the day of the killing, Gonzalez was charged with first-degree murder and second-degree aggravated assault. He admitted to murder Sept. 29 under a plea agreement.

Gonzalez, 26, must serve 30 years behind bars before he's parole-eligible. Once released, he must undergo five years of parole supervision.
