Moms Talk: The Drugs Talk

This week, we ask parents to share how they talk, or plan to talk, about drugs with their kids.

There is no such thing as a fail-safe, guaranteed way to assure your child won't try drugs.

But one way to virtually guarantee that they will is to not talk to them about the dangers of drugs.

Sure, the schools will do their "Just Say No" thing. Police officers will visit schools with the D.A.R.E. program to warn them that drugs will only bring them down.

Those efforts are admirable. For sure.

But nothing replaces the value of a lesson from mom or dad.

So, GT Patch asks its readers to share with other readers some of the tools you've used, or plan to use, to keep your kids from trying drugs, whether it be marijuana, prescription pills or cocaine.

Think about these questions as you offer up your comments:

  • What is the right age to start talking to your kids about drugs?
  • How do you first broach the subject?
  • How often do you talk to your kids about drugs?
  • What do you do if you think your kid has already tried drugs?
