Patrols Snare Four Drunk St. Paddy's Day Drivers

Gloucester Township Police stepped up patrols for the holiday, known for its heavy drinking and drunken driving crashes.

This past St. Patrick's Day, four drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated during Gloucester Township Police Departments St. Patrick's Day weekend DWI saturation patrols. These patrols targeted roadways within the township that have shown in the past to have a higher number of DWI arrest and motor vehicle crashes.

Statistics provided by the National Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that alcohol-impaired crashes claimed a life every 51 minutes in 2010. On St. Patrick's Day alone, 32 percent of fatalities from motor vehicle crashes were connected to drunken driving. In New Jersey last year, there were five fatalities over St. Patrick's Day weekend.

None of the drivers arrested by Gloucester Township Police this weekend were involved in motor vehicle crashes.
