Possible Tornado Hit South Jersey Town On New Year's Eve: NWS

Residents reported hearing a tornado Tuesday night, and had to contend with downed trees and damaged decks and fences.

CLAYTON, NJ — The National Weather Service is investigating whether a tornado touched down in Gloucester County when strong storms blew through on New Year’s Eve, officials said.

The Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management said residents near Fries Mill Road in Clayton reported heavy wind damage to their homes on Tuesday evening.

Several 911 callers believed they heard a tornado, as they reported “freight train like noises and discovered downed trees, damaged decks and fences.” Brief power outages also affected that nearby area.

Officials said the US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly will be investigating the situation and the possibility of a tornado, straight-line winds, or similar.

No injuries have been reported, the OEM said.

There are no records of a tornado warning on New Year's Eve in Gloucester County, but NWS did issue a special weather statement on Tuesday at 5:09 p.m. for strong thunderstorms and the risk of damaging winds.
