Prosecutor: BOLO Ends Township Man's Camco Crime Spree

A township man has been in jail since he was arrested Monday after allegedly attempting to steal a $10 bill from a gas station attendant.

Authorities on Thursday announced the arrest of a township man accused in more than a half-dozen crimes, including three armed robberies, across Camden County between April 29 and May 9.

The man's girlfriend and her sister also were charged in connection with the crime spree, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Steven Hazen, 33, of the 200 block of Burleigh Drive, Somerdale, is accused of robbing restaurant in Laurel Hill Plaza Sunday, among other crimes in the township, Cherry Hill, Runnemede and Stratford since April 29.

Hazen allegedly brandished an imitation firearm in robbing the College Drive Asian-fusion restaurant on Sunday.

It was a "be on the look out" alert, or BOLO, issued for the suspect vehicle in a Runnemede robbery Monday afternoon that led to Hazen's arrest, according to Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk.

Hazen was arrested shortly after he allegedly attempted to steal a $10 bill from the hands of an attendant at the Pioneer gas station located on the Black Horse Pike.

A struggle between Hazen and the attendant for the $10 bill resulted in the bill being ripped in half, according to authorities.

Hazen reportedly fled the gas station in a 2008 Toyota, which a Barrington police officer spotted following the BOLO alert and stopped at Scheina Lane and Enders Drive, in Barrington, authorities said.

Police reportedly recovered an imitation firearm and half of the torn $10 bill from the vehicle.

In addition to the Gloucester Township restaurant and Runnemede gas station robberies, the prosecutor's office indicated Hazen has also been charged with the following crimes:

  • April 29 and May 1—Theft of landscaping equipment from trailers parked at the Chews Landing Road ShopRite
  • May 1—Theft of landscaping equipment from a trailer parked at Lakeview Apartments on Lower Landing Road
  • May 3—Gunpoint robbery of a purse from a woman in the parking lot at Kennedy University Hospital-Stratford
  • May 7—Armed robbery of Hollywood Tans on Evesham Road, in Cherry Hill
  • May 9—Theft of landscaping equipment from a trailer parked at Stetser-Lamartine American Legion hall on Chews Landing Road

Hazen has been charged in Gloucester Township with five counts of theft and single counts of robbery, burglary, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon; in Cherry Hill with robbery and theft; in Stratford with armed robbery and conspiracy; and in Runnemede with robbery.

Hazen was being held in Camden County Correctional Facility as of Thursday night on $390,000 bail.

Melissa Zegan, 29, of Harwood Lane, Clementon, whom the prosecutor's office identified as Hazen's girlfriend, has been charged with conspiracy in connection with the Bamboo Fusion armed robbery.

Her sister, 26-year-old Harwood Lane resident Katie Zegan, has been charged with three counts each of conspiracy and theft. Katie Zegan allegedly served as getaway driver for three landscaping equipment thefts.

Faulk commended the four police departments that investigated the crimes attributed to Hazen—Gloucester Township, Cherry Hill, Runnemede and Stratford—for sharing information they developed in their probes, as well as the Barrington officer for acting on the BOLO.
