Township Asks Residents to Observe 9/11 Moment of Silence

The local governing body joined its brethren in Trenton and Washington in calling for a moment of remembrance at 1 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Sept. 11 will be a day for most Americans to talk about where they were, what they were doing and what they were feeling when our nation came under terrorist attack 10 years earlier.

Except for one moment, that is.

Governments across the country, including the federal government, have passed resolutions and ordered proclamations asking Americans to observe a moment of remembrance at 1 p.m. on 9/11.

The township's proclamation supporting the 9/11 moment of remembrance was read into the record Monday night by Clerk Rosemary DiJosie.

The proclamation, like U.S. Senate Resolution No. 237, asks that all residents cease work and other activities for one minute at 1 p.m. on Sept. 11 for the moment of remembrance.

"It is a day we will never forget and certainly we should take time during that day to reflect and remember those who lost their lives and to remember that we are still fighting a war against terror," Mayor David Mayer said.

Mayer also noted the township will host a 9/11 memorial ceremony at Chews Landing Fire Department's Somerdale Road station. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11.

The fire department will dedicate its World Trade Center Artifact Memorial during the ceremony. The centerpiece of the display will be a 182-pound, 36x24x10 steel beam from one of the fallen World Trade Center buildings.

"It's something we should be proud to have here on display in Gloucester Township to show that our community will never forget and certainly remembers all of those who were killed on Sept. 11," Mayer said.
