GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ - Convenience store cult-favorite Wawa opened its latest New Jersey location in Camden County on Thursday in what serves as the latest grand opening in the company’s expansion.

The location in Gloucester Township at Blackwood Clementon Road joins three other locations in the area.

“Now as for the quality of the 45 hoagies made by the cops and firefighters, let's just say they need to stick to police work and firefighting,” police said in a statement.

Wawa has since donated the hoagies to affiliate organizations, as well as donated $1,000 to each team to the charity of their choice.

Wawa plans to open at least four more stores this summer, continuing to grow the brand's presence around the Garden State. The chain’s 1,000th location opened earlier this year in April.

Last year, Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens told the Philadelphia Business Journal that the company plans to open another 1,800 locations in states across the U.S.

Wawa's future expansion plans include stores with travel centers — "Wawa on steroids," Gheysens told the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia's 2023 Economic Outlook last January.

Gheysens first hinted last April at opening travel centers, telling the Business Journal that the company plans to nearly double its store count and operate about 1,800 locations by 2030. The plan involves new locations in existing markets and expansion into new states. Related article: 'Wawa On Steroids': Chain Could Bring 'Travel Centers' To NJ, PA

Here are where other Wawa locations are slated to open this year:

  • Linden (Route 1 and South Park Ave.)
  • Mount Laurel (1115 Route 73)
  • Neptune (3520 Route 66)

Wawa first opened in April 1964 in Delaware County. There are currently over 1,000 locations located across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., North Carolina and Florida.

In traditional Wawa fashion, local officers and firefighters faced off in the "Hoagies For Heroes" competition, which tested which team could make the most hoagies within three minutes. The winners: Gloucester Township police, with a score of 23- 22 against the Blackwood Fire Company.
