Wet Snow, Flooding Concerns As Winter Storm Hits Gloucester Township

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — The snow has made its way to Gloucester Township, adding some challenges to the Tuesday morning commute. Forecasters expect several inches of snowfall and gusts up to 35 mph before the winter storm tapers off in the afternoon.

Flooding is also possible near the Delaware River.

Much of South Jersey, including Gloucester Township, is under a winter weather advisory until 3 p.m. Tuesday. The advisory, issued Monday evening, anticipated 2-5 inches of snow accumulating and gusts up to 45 mph.

"Briefly heavy snow will be possible around the time of the morning commute," the advisory says. "There is uncertainty regarding snow amounts and how efficiently the snow will accumulate on roads, given mild temperatures with precipitation starting as rain overnight."

Currently, the National Weather Service (NWS) expects 2-4 inches of snow overall. (View the full forecast below).

The overnight rain shifted to wet snow Tuesday morning. There's a slight chance of rain in the afternoon before the precipitation tapers off, according to the NWS.

Unlike the portions of the state receiving heavier snowfall, Gloucester Township has a full day of school Tuesday. But public works crews around Camden County have been treating roadways.

Afternoon temperatures rising into the 40s will make post-storm cleanup more manageable, according to Camden County officials. But drivers should still use caution, according to County Commissioner Al Dyer.

"If you are traveling on the roadways today, please do so cautiously as there is always the possibility for slick spots," said Dyer, liaison to the county's Department of Public Works. "As our crews head out to treat the roads, remember to always leave at least six car lengths behind our vehicles while they work and move any cars off the street and into a driveway."

"Please also remember that it is illegal in New Jersey to plow or shovel snow from private property into roadways," Dyer added.

Camden County is also under a coastal flood advisory, with minor coastal flooding predicted during high tides through Wednesday morning. But on Tuesday afternoon, the winter storm could exacerbate the issue and bring moderate coastal-flooding impacts to some areas along the tidal Delaware River.
