2 Hospitalized After Hackettstown Senior Housing Apartment Fire: Cops

Cause of blaze was due to 'human carelessness,' police report.

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Two Hackettstown Senior Housing residents were hospitalized and eight others suffered smoke inhalation after a fire broke out Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Hackettstown police and fire department responded to the building on Willow Grove Street in reference to an activated fire alarm, Sgt. Darren Tynan said. Upon arrival first responders saw smoke coming from tan apartment on the third floor and heavy smoke in the hallway.

An evacuation of the residents inside the building began, and two were taken to Hackettstown Regional Medical Center for smoke inhalation, Tynan said. Eight others had smoke inhalation but refused medical attention at the scene.

The cause of fire was determined to be accidental due to human carelessness, Tynan said. The apartment sustained fire and water damage and determined uninhabitable. An apartment on the second floor also sustained water damage.
