Hackettstown Man On Heroin High Assaults Officer: Police

Eric Gaertner was passed out behind the steering wheel of his car, police said.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ - A 23-year-old Hackettstown man is in jail after assaulting an officer while high on heroin on Sept. 27, according to the Hackettstown Police Department.

Hackettstown Police responded to Laurie Terrace for a report of a male nodding off in a vehicle. When officers arrived on scene, car had already left. Officers checked the area and found the car topped in the middle of Mitchell Road and the driver, Eric Gaertner, was passed out behind the wheel, police said.

Gaertner had a shoe lace tied around his arm and had an empty heroin wax fold and police said he was under the influence of heroin. Gaertner resisted arrest and elbowed an officer in the left eye, police said.

Gaertner was charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement, being under the influence of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, driving while under the influence, reckless driving, and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.

Gaertner was lodged in the Warren County Correctional Facility.
