Four Centenary students are taking advantage of the time off from classes this summer to bolster their resumés.  What better way to do that, if you are a Sports Management student, than by working for the New York Yankees?

Marquay Mayo from Springfield, Christopher Ohlweiler from Verona, Danny Derner from Rutherford and Cesar Storm from Union City received information about summer positions with the New York Yankees Youth Baseball Summer Camp through Centenary Head Baseball Coach Scott Kushner.

These student athletes were not going to let this opportunity pass by, and applied and went through the lengthy interview process.  All were hired for paid positions for the summer; Mayo, Derner and Ohlweiler as baseball coaches and Storm as a special operations manager.

As coaches, Mayo, Derner and Ohlweiler work with a group of six and 11 children ages five to 14.  There are 12 to 20 coaches for multiple New Jersey locations and each week they spend a day at Yankees Stadium.  As special operations manager, Storm handles the site setup and manages the day-to-day operations in order to run a successful camp.

“This has been an amazing experience for all of us,” said Mayo.  “For me, it is a great satisfaction to teach children about the game and help them improve their skill level.  Each child has improved quite a bit and has had the opportunity to not only acquire the skills to play better, but be exposed to a camp that provides them with the insight of the history and the philosophy of the Yankees team.  That is something that they will remember for a long time and, hopefully, they will come back to the camp each year.”
