5 Ex-NFLers From Same Camden County Street To Be Honored

The retired athletes, including 3-time Super Bowl champ John Taylor, helped make Pennsauken High School a football powerhouse in the 1980s.

PENNSAUKEN, NJ — Five retired NFL players, who grew up on the same Camden County street, will be honored in the town where it all began.

Officials will install a historical marker Wednesday to honor the five athletes linked to Remington Avenue in Pennsauken: Todd McNair, Billy and David Griggs, and John and Keith Taylor.

The marker will be located at Wesley Gaines Park — adjacent to 1031 Derousse Ave., Pennsauken.

The five honorees made Pennsauken High School a football powerhouse in the 1980s, when the school won three state sectional championships in South Jersey Group IV.

"These men grew up in the same neighborhood here in Camden County and went on to have incredible careers in the National Football League," said Camden County Commissioner Al Dyer. "Preserving this piece of history is crucial and we are thrilled to honor Billy, David, John, Keith and Todd for their contributions to the sport of football and to the Pennsauken community."

McNair will attend the ceremony with elected officials and members of the Pennsauken Historical Society.

Here's more on each retired athlete:

John Taylor

San Francisco 49ers (1987-95)

John Taylor won three Super Bowls with the Niners, serving as a counterpart to gridiron great Jerry Rice at wide receiver. During his career, Taylor made two Pro Bowls and was named to the NFL 1980s All-Decade team.

Taylor is arguably best known for catching the game-winning pass from Joe Montana in the final seconds of Super Bowl XXIII in 1989. In that match, he also set the record for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history (45 yards), which stood until the Broncos' Jordan Norwood recorded a 61-yard return. in Super Bowl 50.

Keith Taylor

Indianapolis Colts (1988-91), New Orleans Saints (1992-93), Washington Redskins (1994-96)

The safety recorded 13 interceptions and four fumble recoveries in his nine-year career.

Todd McNair

Kansas City Chiefs (1989-93, 1996), Houston Oilers (1994-95)

McNair played a variety of roles in the pros, including third-down back, lead blocker and special teams. He finished his career with 254 catches for 2,435 yard, 803 rushing yards, and 10 touchdowns.

He most recently served as running backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2019-22, which included the squad that won Super Bowl LV in 2021.

David Griggs

Miami Dolphins (1989-93), San Diego Chargers (1994)

In six NFL seasons, David Griggs recorded 14.5 sacks, four fumble recoveries and one interception at linebacker. He also started in Super Bowl XXIX for the Chargers.

Griggs died in a car accident in 1995. He was 28.

Billy Griggs

New York Jets, 1984-89

At tight end, Billy Griggs caught 25 passes for 262 yards with the Jets. He was also Pennsauken High School's offensive and defensive line coach in 2011.
