8 Candidates Run for 3 BOE Seats in Haddonfield
Could contested elections be a new trend in the borough?
The deadline for candidates to file a petition to run for local school boards Tuesday produced a crowded field in Haddonfield.
Eight candidates will compete for three, three-year terms on the borough school board. By contrast, Maureen Eyles, Andrew Berlin and Dennis Kelleher ran unopposed last fall.
The candidates are Matthew Jeremy Bass, Carlton Chin, Mary Fagan, Kathryn Casey Glazer, Lisa Hurly, Ken Kouba, Amy Keys Shaw and Dave Siedell.

Many of the candidates appear to be political newcomers. Kouba, who lost a bid for the borough Board of Commissioners last month in his first run for public office, is an exception. In that race there were six candidates running for three seats.
The board's unsuccessful $12.5 million referendum to buy the Bancroft property adjacent to the high school was defeated by voters in January. The installation of artificial turf on the high school football stadium and an adjacent practice field were also actions for which there was some public opposition. Those issues may have led to the crowed field of candidates.

Three incumbent board members, Joe Ehrhardt, Cheryl Laney and Steve Weinstein all decided not to run for reelection. None were immediately available for comment.
The election is on Nov. 5.
