HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A revival of McMillan's Bakery is not happening, according to the namesake family who ran the longtime business that closed several months ago.

McMillan's Bakery opened in 1939 and was passed down through several generations of the McMillan family. But they decided last year to wind down operations before the Haddon Township bakery closed in May.

The property was sold to entrepreneur Tom Whitman, who owns Del Buono's Bakery and Carmen's Deli. In October, reports emerged that Whitman sought to revive the bakery, with a member of the McMillan family — Doug Biemiller, the founders' grandson — overseeing baking and production.

At the time, Whitman told The Philadelphia Inquirer wanted to acquire the McMillan's name for the new business and his lawyer was in negotiations with the family.

However, the McMillan family said Monday that they are not involved in this new venture.

"We don't have specific plans to announce today, but we want to emphasize that the McMillan's name, recipes, and legacy remain with our family," the family said. "We understand the new owner of 15-17 Haddon Avenue plans to open a bakery under a different name. We wish them the best of luck in their new venture."

When reports emerged of a McMillan's revival, the family says they chose to address it with the involved parties privately before making a public statement.

It's unclear what discussions took place when it came to reviving the McMillan's name, acquiring their recipes and bringing any family members on board. An attorney representing the McMillan family deferred to new ownership for information beyond the family's statement.

A call to Whitman and an email to his businesses were not immediately returned.

George and Evelyn McMillan founded McMillan's, which became known for their cream doughnuts and other sweets that attracted lines out the door during the holiday season.

But in October 2024, the family listed the bakery for sale and said it would permanently close on a date to be determined. The announcement came a year the death of Arline C. Biemiller — George and Evelyn McMillan's eldest daughter, who spearheaded the business after taking over for her parents.

Arline's children and grandchildren carried on the family legacy, but loved ones said she was the glue that held McMillan's together.
