South Jersey Forest Fire Reaches 1,200 Acres But Firefighters Gaining Control

VINELAND, NJ — A wildfire that broke out in Cumberland County on Friday reached 1,200 acres by Saturday afternoon, but fire crews had made significant progress containing the blaze, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said.

Danny's Wildfire was first reported Friday afternoon when it started in a remote part of the Peaslee Wildlife Management Area in Vineland. Two hours later, the blaze had burned through 500 acres, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

By late Saturday afternoon, crews from the forest fire service had the fire 75 percent contained, the forest fire service said.

Officials said no structures were impacted by the blaze. No injuries have been reported.

Two roads that were closed — Union Road and Bennetts Mill Road — had been reopened as of the 3:30 p.m. update.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service deployed fire engines, bulldozers and ground crews to battle the blaze. On Friday, crews used a helicopter and air tanker to drop hundreds of gallons of water on the flames.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
