Beloved Haddon Heights Market Has Uncertain Future As Family Seeks Buyer

HADDON HEIGHTS, NJ — John's Friendly Market, a longtime fixture of downtown Haddon Heights, is up for sale. But the family business hopes future ownership will maintain the corner store's legacy.

Patrons have been speculating about the future of John's Market. The business, which has stood for decades, confirmed that they're seeking a buyer.

"Age, health issues, and family circumstances make it impossible for us to operate JFM indefinitely," John's Market said Tuesday on social media. "We are looking for someone who will continue to run John’s as a family owned and operated market. We’re grateful for all the support we’ve received from the community that has allowed us to stay in business for all these years."

John C. Johnson, the store's namesake, worked as a grocer for most of his life, according to his obituary from 2011. After returning from World War II, he worked in the store under its previous ownership — when it was called Lindsey's Market — before purchasing the business.
