Green Thumbs Lead to Community Greening Award
The Haddon Township community garden won a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society award.
The Haddon Township Community Garden is getting regional recognition in it's inaugural year.
The garden won a Community Greening award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, known for sponsoring the Philadelphia Flower Show, according to Gwenne Baile of Sustainable Haddon Township.
The evaluators visited 89 nominated sites and recommended the community garden, located behind the historical Champion School at Collings Avenue and Lynne Avenue be given the award.
The Executive Committee and several of the gardeners will be traveling to Harrisburg to receive the award in December.
The community garden was the first initiative of Sustainable Haddon Township and was just a seed of an idea a year ago. Since then, the location was determined, grants were received and support from the governing body of Haddon Township was secured. Raised beds were made with the assistance of Rutgers Master Gardeners of Camden County and plantings started in April.
Currently, there are 36 beds of various sizes and 21 gardeners. There are still about 40 residents on the waiting list.
