Acclaimed 50s-Style Restaurant Pitched For Haddon Twp. Has Hearing Postponed

The restaurant was proposed for the former site of the Newton Diner, which burned down 15 years ago.

HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ — A hearing for a Nifty Fifty's restaurant proposed for the former site of the Newton Diner in Haddon Township was postponed.

The application was scheduled for a hearing at Thursday's Planning/Zoning Board meeting. However, it has been postponed for the Aug. 7 meeting, officials told Patch.

Nifty Fifty's is a nostalgia-themed restaurant chain with locations throughout Greater Philadelphia. The diner-style eateries feature old-fashioned soda fountains, hand-spun milkshakes and neon lighting to create a 1950s ambiance.

The restaurants have earned numerous accolades, including 10 of Philadelphia Magazine's "Best of Philly" awards.

The listed applicant — UK Brothers 11, inc. — wants to bring Nifty Fifty's to the former site of the Newton Diner, which closed 15 years ago after a fire destroyed it.

For the project to move forward, Haddon Township's Planning/Zoning Board must approve the restaurant's construction.

The property (931 White Horse Pike) remain vacant. It is located adjacent to The Ritz Theatre Company.

Haddon Township's Planning/Zoning Board typically meets on the first Thursday of each month. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. in the meeting room on the second floor of the Municipal Building (135 Haddon Ave.).
