Urban Promise Sponsors 3-Mile Charity Walk at Cooper River

The fundraising walk on Friday will benefit Urban Promise ministries abroad.

Camden-based UrbanPromise International is kicking off its “In Charity’s Shoes” campaign with a 3-mile walk at Cooper River Park on Friday, according to a news release.

“Charity is the name of a young girl who walks four hours roundtrip, every day, in order to attend the closest school to her village,”  Kelly Kulp, the coordinator of the “In Charity’s Shoes” campaign, explained. “The determination she exhibits to overcome her circumstances and beat the overwhelming odds against her are awe-inspiring. We want the world to know her story—and the stories of thousands of other children like her. We at UrbanPromise International want to ensure that education isn’t just for the privileged few.”

Over 120 children from UrbanPromise Academy and CamdenForward School are expected to attend Friday’s walk.  Beginning at 9 a.m., the walk will take participants along the river and will feature several stations for reflection along the way.

The walk is the first in a series of events designed to raise awareness about the everyday obstacles and hardships thousands of children face in Malawi, Africa in order to receive a basic education.

“The ultimate goal is to raise funds for our ministries who serve kids like Charity through their after-school programs and schools,” Kulp said. “Several of our ministries are working towards building schools closer to the children they serve, giving them more access to education and tutoring.”
