Special Superstorm Sandy Meeting, School News and Santa This Week

Coming up this week on Patch

The community is invited to attend a special borough meeting to address Superstorm Sandy, its aftermath and the damage it caused and what can be done in the future to prepare for such weather events.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11 in the council chambers at Borough Hall. Mayor Rose Heck will chair the meeting and among those who will be speaking are Police Chief Michael Colaneri who also serves as the borough's emergency management coordinator.

Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions. Borough CFO and Administrator Mike Kronyak and William Spindler, the DPW superintendent will also be on hand for questions from the public.

The Oct. 29 superstorm, which has been referred to as "New Jersey's Katrina" took down trees and powerlines all throughout the borough causing 70 percent of the borough to go without power.  Some areas of the borough remained without power for 10 days.

Schools were shut for an entire work due to loss of power. Borough Hall and the Public Safety Building also were without power for days operating on generator.

The meeting will preceed the 8 p.m. regular public meeting of the mayor and council and work session where the latest updates on ongoing projects will be discussed.

Also this week the Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education will conduct its final regular meeting of the 2012 year prior to its reorganization meeting which is set for Thursday, Jan. 3.

Santa Claus makes an appearance in town once again this Friday, Dec. 14 as the Hasbrouck Heights Junior Women's Club once again presents its annual Pizza With Santa event at the municipal building from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
