As I noted in my first Campaign Corner message a couple of weeks ago, I believe it is important to share with you the progress made on some key initiatives, and to highlight various accomplishments of the Township Committee during my tenure. This week, I would like to share with you the success that Hillsborough Township has had regarding our sustainability initiatives.
As one of the initial members of the Sustainable Hillsborough Steering Committee, which began in 2006, I have helped to oversee Hillsborough’s significant progress on its sustainability development plan.
Hillsborough has been and remains at the forefront in this effort. Earlier this year, it was announced by Sustainable Jersey, a sustainable certification program for municipalities in New Jersey, that Hillsborough Township had met the rigorous requirements to achieve the Sustainable Jersey Bronze re-certification. Our municipality is one of 125 municipalities in the state to achieve certification. To become Sustainable Jersey certified, Hillsborough completed a number of the required sustainability actions, and took on initiatives to help “go green,” control costs and save money, and take steps to preserve the quality of life in the Township over the long term.

We continue to make progress on becoming more energy efficient, both as a means to improved sustainability and in order to help drive down municipal costs. Last year, we completed a key project under our Energy Savings Improvement Plan – the installation of a new solar energy generation system at the Municipal Complex. The project consisted of the replacement of the 20+ year old roof at the Municipal Complex, replacement of the inefficient and antiquated HVAC system, and the installation of solar panels on the roof to utilize solar power for much of the Complex’s energy needs. As a result of the project, total energy savings to the taxpayers will total more than $1.2 million.

This project serves an important dual purpose for the township: 1) the implementation of a new alternative energy plan that is consistent with our sustainability objectives 2) the continuation of our on-going cost reduction initiative by reducing the township’s energy costs.
The Township Committee and I are very proud of having achieved Sustainable Jersey Bronze re-certification for the township. This certification validates our commitment to a sustainable Hillsborough. The solar project was also a significant accomplishment with long term savings to our taxpayers. Both initiatives validate our commitment to and track record of fiscally prudent management of municipal government.
