No Frights for Young Trick-or-Treaters at Township Party

With a not-too-haunted house, hayride and more, hundreds of families find it the perfect Halloween treat.

Halloween can be tricky for little ones: it's good to be scared—but maybe not too much so.

That's why when the workers with the Parks and Rec Department, which sponsored the event, began putting up the "Haunted House" display at the municipal complex for Thursday's Halloween Party, they skipped the more ghoulish attractions of some haunted houses.

After all, most of their guests are pretty young—none the less, the crews look forward to the annual event and their part in it.

"We have a lot of fun putting it up," Brian VanDongen, of the Parks and Rec Department, said. "It's one of the best things we get to do all year."

Lots of kids in town probably agree with him: the lines for the hayride in the municipal soccer fields next to the municipal complex were 20-30 deep, and kids waited patiently for their turns to walk through the Haunted House display. A total of 253 families registered for the event.

Girl Scouts helped collect guesses at the number of candy corns in a basket for a prize, and the ballots on the pumpkins entered in the pumpkin carving contest—a new treat for this year's event.
