Watch Out For Scammers Posing As Hillsborough Police, Demanding Money

"The Police Department has seen a recent increase of law enforcement impersonation scams," said Chief Michael McMahon.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Township Police Chief Michael McMahon is warning residents to watch out for phone scammers pretending to be police and demanding money.

"The Police Department has seen a recent increase of law enforcement impersonation scams," said McMahon.

Unknown people are calling residents claiming they are with law enforcement agencies and state and stating that the resident has a warrant for their arrest.

The scammers the advise the resident to withdraw cash, deposit the cash in a Bitcoin kiosk to pay the warrant, or they will be immediately arrested.

"Please be aware that no law enforcement agency will call you and have you deposit money at any location other than the court office or the Police station itself," said McMahon. "Please do not entertain these calls or send any money. In most cases if you have a warrant, law enforcement will come to you directly in person."

If a resident is a victim of any scam, they can report it at the Hillsborough Police station at any time or call 908-369-4323.
