When Disaster Strikes: Volunteers Sought To Aid Somerset Co. Neighbors

The Community Emergency Response Team is looking for volunteers, and you may sign up for an upcoming training course to get certified.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — In disasters and emergencies, first responders in Somerset County communities cannot always be on-scene immediately to help residents. That's where the Community Emergency Response Team can step in, and the program is looking for new volunteers who will be trained to respond in crisis situations.

CERT is "an all-hazard, all-risk training program designed to teach you how to protect yourself, your family, your neighbors and community during a disaster situation," said the county Office of Emergency Management. The team partners with local first responders to assist people in the communities they serve, in the event of emergencies such as flooding, earthquakes, tornadoes, snow emergencies, and other natural hazards.

Free training sessions are coming up this fall for Somerset County residents interested in joining CERT, to educate new volunteers about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and train them in basic disaster response skills. Registration is open, with an application deadline of Sept. 23.
