Although the summer isn't over yet, Acting Superintendent of Schools Peter Carter has started thinking about the new school year. This will probably be Carter's last year, since the Board of Education is looking for a new superintendent.
Here are some updates from the letter he posted on the Board of Education's web site.
- The superintendent has indicated that he will not be making a decision about school uniforms for the students in Hoboken's public schools. Although a survey showed that the majority of the elementary school community was in favor of uniforms—khakis and a polo, knee length skirt for girls—but no official policy will be instituted.

"Basically, including our eighth through twelfth graders, we require modest attire below the waist, and a collared shirt/top above the waist, with all garments reaching at least the waist," wrote Carter.
- Carter also announced the start of the lap top program, which will mean that all 7th and 8th graders will receive a Dell laptop. Parents have to be present when students receive the laptop. There will be scheduled hours for pick up.

- There are still some openings in the district. "As of the writing of this letter, a recommendation has not been made to the Board of Education with respect to selection of a Wallace School Principal, a Supervisor for Pupil Support, or a Director for Curriculum and Instruction and Personnel," Carter wrote. "We are optimistic to fill those positions by the time of the September Board of Education meeting, but be assured that there shall be no vacancies in our classroom teaching positions."
The next Board of Education meeting is Tuesday Aug. 10, at 7 p.m. at 1115 Clinton St.
