Case Of The Missing 'No Parking' Signs In Hoboken: Where Are They?
At least one block of Hoboken is missing signs to let parkers know when street sweeping takes place. Someone still got a ticket.
HOBOKEN, NJ — Mile-square Hoboken is known to have a parking crunch, so the city restricts one side of most streets for residents only, and allows visitor parking in other areas.
Usually the signs make it clear who can and can't park, and when parking is prohibited for street sweeping and other matters.
But on the west side of town, where various construction projects are ongoing, signs giving the street sweeping times were missing on at least one block.

On the 1100 block of Grand St., on the east side — where visitor permit parking is usually allowed — there are signs saying not to park in the driveways and signs to use PayMobile, but it doesn't say why someone would need to pay, or when.
A parking ticket was spotted on a vehicle on that street on Aug. 21, saying the person failed to move for street sweeping. The ticket was issued at 1:17 p.m.

If people see a ParkMobile sign, should they find another way to determine parking rules without signs?
City Responds
Patch reached out to the city about the matter.
City spokesperson Marilyn Baer said Friday, "Thank you for bringing this to our attention. At this time, there is one sign posted at the south end of the block, which is currently obstructed by an overgrown tree. In light of this, and to ensure fairness, the city will be recommending dismissal of the street cleaning ticket."
She added, "To improve visibility and enforcement moving forward, we will be installing an additional sign and have requested tree trimming. These steps will ensure we maintain street cleanliness and quality of life for area residents."
Hoboken posts its parking rules on its website, as well as frequently asked questions, but the information can be hard to find or understand in a hurry if someone came into town for a short visit — which is why signs help.
Hoboken also lists temporary "No Parking" areas on this map. Temporary no parking signs are issued for construction, moving (when a request is approved), and other official business. Click here for questions about temporary no parking signs.
