City Takes Steps to Pass Food Truck Law

It's been a while, but the is back on the city's mind. 

The measure, which was re-introduced after being put on hold for two months, passed on first reading on Wednesday night. The new law increases the fee the trucks have to pay and enforces parking rules. 

Truck owners can choose between a four-day and a seven-day permit. Owners will still have to pay a $500 registration fee as well as an enforcment fee. Trucks are also required to install Global Positioning Systems in their vehicles, so that the parking enforcement can be made easier. 

The trucks will also have to obey parking rules, but—because of the annual costs—enjoy some privileges. 

For example, trucks are allowed to be parked in Hoboken for eight hours a day, rather than the customary four. Trucks can not be parked at one spot for more than six hours, said Councilwoman Jennifer Giattino, who sponsored the new law. 

The council passed the new law 8-1 on first reading, with Councilman Michael Russo voting "no." 

At the next meeting (which will be held on the first Wednesday in March), the law will be up for a vote again, and the public will be able to chime in.
