Bhalla: 'We're Hurt Badly As a Community,' In Response to Wisconsin Shooting

Hoboken's Sikh Councilman Ravi Bhalla said on Tuesday that the community is in shock and grieving.

The local Sikh community is shocked and full of grief, said in a phone call on Tuesday in response to the tragic shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. 

"We're hurt badly as a community," Bhalla said. "The feeling on the ground here among New Jersey residents is complete shock and a lot of grief." 

The shooting occured on Sunday at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, leaving at least six people dead after a gunman opened fire.

Bhalla, the first Sikh council member in the state and currently one of the highest Sikh elected officials in the country, attended a vigil on Sunday night at a Sikh temple in Glen Rock, he said.

Bhalla said the support he received from other elected officials has been overwhelming.

The response from every segment of the population, Bhalla said, has been "extraordinarily uplifting." 

"We strongly feel that America is behind us," Bhalla said.
