Culinary Classroom and Gym Renovations Among Improvements at High School

Hoboken High School is being renovated before the new school year starts.

This year, Hoboken High School students will have a full commercial kitchen and a cafe in their building.

Adjacent to the cafeteria, a classroom is currently being transformed into a kitchen-classroom, said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Toback on Tuesday.

With the classroom comes a new culinary program, for which an instructor has been hired. Students in the program can use multiple days a week to cook and learn the techniques, and other days to serve it up to their fellow high school students.

The program is supposed to help high school students be more job ready. At the end of the program, students receive a certificate from the National Restaurant Association.

The equipment cost about $119,000 to purchase and was budgeted for in last year's budget.

The gym in the building is also being renovated, Toback said. The bleachers in the gym as well as the divider are being replaced and brought "up to code," Toback said.

Renovations to the high school gym—as well as the gym at Wallace—cost about $145,000. The project is funded with money from the district's six-year capital plan, Toback said.

The renovations to the high school are scheduled to be done by the beginning of the school year, Toback said.
