Viaduct Construction to Cause Road Closure; Detour

Traffic on the Fourteenth Street Viaduct will be closed in west bound direction, starting August 13, the city announced. 

The construction is scheduled to last ten weeks, every day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The east bound side will remain open.  

The contract for construction of the viaduct called for the complete closure of the viaduct at night to install 50 beams that average 120 feet long, according to the city.

Initially this work was expected to be done in the evening hours in August and September. The nighttime construction would have brought some noise with it. 

With this new schedule, one lane on the viaduct can stay open while work is being done during the day.  

While the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. are supposed to avoid the busiest rush hour traffic—at which point the lane will be opened back up—traffic congestion is still expected.  

There will be no nighttime construction. 

There is no additional cost or time involved with the detour change, the city announced.

Sheriffs will be stationed at each end of the viaduct and will if necessary, allow emergency vehicles to go through.
