Heatwave Comes to Hoboken; City Opens Cooling Center

100º weather expected on Saturday.

An excessive heat warning on Saturday afternoon has been issued by the National Weather Service. The city will be opening a cooling center between 1 and 6 p.m. 

There is also a chance of thunderstorms at night, according to the National Weather Service. 

The city is advising everyone to keep cool, stay inside and stay in the shade as temperatures will likely reach 100 degrees.

The City of Hoboken will open a cooling center at the Multi Service Center, 124 Grand Street, from noon to 6pm on Saturday, July 7. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning during that time.

Sprinklers and water features are available for cooling off at Church Square Park, Jackson Street Park, Madison Park, Elysian Park, Stevens Park, Pier A, and Pier C. 

Residents are urged to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly and those with disabilities and to consider the following heat-related emergency safety tips: 

• Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible 
• If you do go outside, stay in the shade 
• If your home is not air conditioned, spend at least two hours daily at an air conditioned mall, library or other public place 
• Wear sunscreen outside, along with loose fitting light colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible 
• Drink water regularly even if you are not thirsty. Limit alcohol, and sugary drinks which speeds dehydration 
• Never leave children or pets alone in the car 
• Avoid exertion during the hottest part of the day 
• Take a cool shower or bath 
• Be a good neighbor, check on elderly and people with disabilities who may need assistance keeping cool
