Hey, Hoboken: Donate Your Shoes!

Mustard Seed students are collecting shoes for charity.

Tige Anderson, 12, and Owen Possick, 11, attended the Hoboken City Council meeting on Wednesday night, urging Hobokenites to donate their shoes. Below their plan, as well as fun video.

When Anderson and Possick they learned that over 300 million pairs of shoes are thrown in the trash each year they decided to do something about it.  With the help of their school, the boys are working with the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program which turns old, worn out sneakers--sneakers that would have end up in a landfill--into playing surfaces for parks, running tracks,  and basketball courts. The intrepid 6th graders are determined to collect more than 500 pairs of sneakers  which they will then send to the Reuse-A-Shoe program for recycling. A collection bin has also been placed in City Hall by Hoboken’s Green Team, and you can take shoe donations there as well.  Also, anyone interested in donating sneakers (no cleats or spikes please) can call 201-668-2989 to arrange for a pickup between now and February 16th.
