At Least Nine Arrested On Hoboken's St Patty's Day

As day goes on and the sun goes down, Hoboken police made "numerous" more arrests

It may be tamer than last year, but that doesn't mean this year's St. Patrick's Day is completely uneventful. Hoboken Police arrested at least nine people, said Director of Public Safety Angel Alicea.

Last year, he said, six people were arrested. More arrests were made this year, Alicea said, because of the enforced zero tolerance policy.

As the parade goers left the streets and the sun slowly started to set on Saturday afternoon, the sound of sirens increased. In the afternoon Police Captain Anthony Romano said the police had made "numerous" more arrests.

Three people were arrested in front of East LA on Washington Street around 6:25 after an alleged argument. Several police cars responded and arrested two men and a woman.

One Hudson County Rapid Response Force Officer said that a cop was hit during the fight.

"They hit police officers and civilians," the officer said, who asked to remain anonymous. "People will never understand until they put this uniform on."

Alyssa Moreno, 24, from Jersey City said the girl who got arrested is her best friend.

"They roughed her up," said Moreno, about the officers handcuffing the 25-year-old woman. "I think as the cops showed up, she was caught in the cross fire."

Moreno said her friend was innocent, and just got arrested because she was standing too close to two guys arguing.

"I don't know who they are," Moreno said about the two men.

Saturday night, after public officials and families went back home after the parade, those left on Washington Street were the 20-something party goers with quite some alcohol in their systems.

The reason why there were more sirens, Alicea said, is because more police officers respond quicker this year than last.

"This time we have enough man power to respond to accidents," Alicea said.

Alicea said he did not know how many calls the police department had received so far.

Ron Marsico, spokesman for Port Authority New York and New Jersey said that Port Authority Police had made no arrests.
