Former Jersey Diner Will Reopen As Constantine Rental Apartments In Hoboken In 2024

Signage has appeared on the former site of the Malibu Diner in Hoboken, saying apartments will open there in 2024. (UPDATED)

HOBOKEN, NJ — When the owners of Hoboken's beloved Malibu Diner closed up on the last day of 2021, they always said they'd reopen someday, but as part of a residential development.

After the diner was demolished last year, new development began taking shape. Now, signage hints at what is to come in that spot: one-, two-, and three-bedroom rentals.

The new apartments will be known as The Constantine, and they'll open in 2024.

But will they contain a restaurant?

"Ownership is still finalizing these details," said a representative for their real estate broker, promising further details later this year.

The valuable property is located at 14th Street and Willow Avenue, near the northwest corner of the city and less than a mile from the Lincoln Tunnel entrance.

The diner had been perched at the northern entrance to the mile-square city since the 1940s.

While space for restaurants is usually limited in Hoboken, the Malibu once offered a parking lot, two rooms with tables and booths, extensive meal options, and a glass display of cakes and pies.

The Babalis family took over the Malibu in 1979.

In 2019, the property owners submitted plans to someday demolish and rebuild the diner as part of a larger development including residential and commercial space. READ MORE: Patriarch Of Popular Malibu Diner In Hoboken Passes Away

The family had said they wanted to build a five-story apartment building. The diner would be on the ground floor.

Until the Malibu reopens, Hoboken is left without a diner, although the city has dozens of popular restaurants.
