Local Dance School Offers Scholarship to Hoboken Housing Authority Residents

Children living in the Hoboken Housing Authority will be able to sign up for the HOP for Dance scholarship program, according to Casey Cotney, head of development at Hudson Dance & Movement. 

Students can register for the new program on Feb. 25, during the Black Youth Empowerment Luncheon hosted by the Hoboken Housing Authority. There are 24 available spots, Cotney said.

HOP is an eight-week dance training program. 

According to Cotney, "the 'D Quarter' is designed to give children of the community means of extracurricular activities they could not otherwise take part in."

The students will receive training in 3 specific disciplines from professional instructors of Hudson Dance & Movement: Ballet, Ballroom, and Contemporary. A brief performance will mark the end of the quarter when five students will be chosen to receive Hudson Dance & Movement Summer Intensive Scholarships provided by anonymous sponsors.

Upon completion of the summer intensive, HDM Artistic Director, Bethany Marc-Aurele, will hand select a single student to receive a full tuition scholarship through HOP, Cotney said.

“We’re delighted to expose our kids to creative opportunities that bond housing, education and the arts for our kids to pursue their dreams," said HHA Executive Director Carmelo Garcia in a statement.  

A signed agreement requires students to maintain good grades and positive involvement in and outside the classroom.  

Cotney said that HOP is also scheduled to offer a second Ballroom Program at in May.
