A man fell to his death during a police chase on Tuesday, said the NJ attorney general's office, which is investigating.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A man fell to his death during a foot chase involving North Jersey police on Tuesday, state officials said.

The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability said Friday that they're investigating "a death following a foot pursuit involving law enforcement" in Guttenberg, a small city overlooking the Hudson River in Hudson County.

The identity of the man who died is not being released at this time, state officials said.

Officials said that according to a preliminary investigation, just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, Guttenberg police responded to a 911 call reporting a "disturbance" near 68th Street and Bellevue Avenue.

Witnesses gave police a description and said one person might have a gun.

Police found a man fitting one of the descriptions near 7000 John F. Kennedy Blvd. East, according to investigators.

The man allegedly climbed over a railing adjacent to the building after a foot chase, and fell to his death over an embankment, state officials said.

Fire Department and EMS personnel responded and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene, officials said.

A gun was found on his person, officials said.

No further information is being released at this time.

According to a 2019 law in New Jersey, the Attorney General's Office must investigate any death during an encounter with law enforcement. The results will be presented to a grand jury "to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officer or officers involved," the Attorney General's Office noted.
