PATH weekend service on the Newark-to-World Trade Center line will resume with the reopening of the World Trade Center and Exchange Place stations during the weekend of Dec. 20-21. The opening comes after nearly a year’s worth of intensive cleanup and upgraded signal work in two tunnels below the Hudson River.
PATH riders will be able to travel between New Jersey and New York from all other PATH stations on weekends, including Grove Street, Newport and Journal Square in Jersey City.
Journal Square-33rd (Hoboken) Schedule Changes
On Saturday, trains on the Journal Square-33rd (Hoboken) line remain on a 10-minute schedule and Newark – Journal Square trains will operate on a 20-minute schedule for most of the day.
On Sunday, the Journal Square-33rd Street (via Hoboken) line will operate on a 12-minute schedule from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Newark to Journal Square service will operate on a 20-minute schedule between 9 a.m. to 10:40 p.m.
Work will be completed during additional outages on weekends in the second half of 2015 on both the Journal Square-33rd Street via Hoboken line, along with completion of remaining work on the Newark-to-World Trade Center line.
Following a cable fire earlier this year that created outages, the Journal Square-33rd Street via Hoboken line work will assess the condition of stonework that comprises electrical cable ducts alongside the tracks. Dates and details of these outages will be provided to the public once planning work in finalized.
Riders are encouraged to pick up a new PATH “Timetable, Map & Guide” located in each station, allow extra travel time and check for weekend schedule changes and station closures posted on the Port Authority website, PATHAlerts and Twitter, and are also available on the Toll Free Information Line: 1-800-234-PATH (7284).
Using the Ferry as Alternative Transportation
Unless stated otherwise, riders who would normally use PATH between New Jersey and Lower Manhattan on weekends can use alternative ferry service that is available on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., at the Paulus Hook Terminal in Jersey City and the World Financial Center Ferry Terminal in New York.
PATH riders can use the ferry provided at the Exchange Place and World Trade Center stations as an alternative travel source. PATH is in the midst of a weekend outage schedule for an array of projects, including but not limited to post-Sandy desalination, track repairs, life safety/security work, lighting and communications, as well as recovering schedule time lost due to Superstorm Sandy to implement Positive Train Control safety improvements.
The ferry fare will be $2.50 one-way, or $5 round trip, paid via cash, credit or debit card at either terminal ticketing booth. This cost is below the typical cost of a ferry ride across the Hudson River. Children age five and under ride free. Riders can also board with bicycles, and will be subject to the ferry’s additional $1 charge.
For those traveling from Manhattan to Jersey City, the World Trade Center Ferry Terminal is located at end of Vesey Street on the Hudson River, in close proximity to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s 2, 3, E and R subway trains and M20 and M22 buses.

Purchase Tickets on Your Smartphone
Additionally, passengers can now purchase weekend PATH and ferry tickets using the NY Waterways Smartphone App. The mobile ticketing app is available as a free download for iPhones and Android phones.
Tickets purchased through the mobile ticketing app are activated by passengers immediately before boarding, whereupon a boarding pass will be displayed on the passenger’s phone. Purchasing tickets through the mobile ticketing app is a great way for riders to avoid lines at ticketing booths.
Travel time between terminals is approximately seven minutes and ferries will depart every 15 minutes, beginning with the 8 a.m. departure from Paulus Hook. The last ferry will depart Paulus Hook at 9:45 p.m. and the World Financial Ferry Terminal at 9:53 p.m. One boat will be traveling back and forth between these two terminals.
Cross-Honoring Tickets
Additionally, PATH has an agreement with NJ Transit to cross-honor PATH passengers who show their SmartLink card or Metrocard on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail at the Exchange Place, Newport and Hoboken stations during the upcoming weekend closures.
Connecting at Alternative PATH Stations
Those needing to connect to PATH trains may go to the Grove Street station – which is approximately a 12-minute walk and the closest open PATH station from the Paulus Hook Terminal. The closest entrance to PATH is at the intersection of Christopher Columbus and Marin Boulevard. Please note, Grove Street does not have an elevator and is not ADA-accessible.
Newport, another nearby station, is ADA-accessible and equipped with elevators. To get to Newport, you can take the NJ Transit Light Rail from Exchange Place to Newport. As an alternative, passengers can walk north on Washington Boulevard to the Newport station, which is about a 20-minute walk.
PATH riders also may seek information on alternative service from the Port Authority Website, PATHAlerts and Twitter.
