Plant a Street Tree, Shade Your Block from the Heat

The Quality of Life Coalition's Committee for a Green Hoboken is encouraging residents to inquire with the city's Shade Tree Commission about adopting trees on Hoboken streets.

With scorching temperatures sitting squarely in the 90s this week and excessive heat precautions being taken region-wide, the Quality of Life Coalition's Committee for a Green Hoboken is encouraging residents to plant trees on their block to make city walking more tolerable.

Recent measurements taken by the committee using infrared cameras show an average 25 degree temperature difference between the same sidewalk when it's exposed to direct sunlight versus when it's shaded by a tree.

Residents who would like to plant a tree on their block can fill out a tree permit application (attached) and contact the Hoboken Shade Tree Commission at 201-420-2015 or by email at jtricarico@hobokennnj.org.

A typical tree installation costs approximately $200 and lasts a few hours, according to the Committee for a Green Hoboken.
