Around 10 a.m. on Sunday, a ShopRite store manager told police that he believed a fraudulent delivery was about to be made to 9th and Clinton Streets, according to the police report.

A Jersey City man had been ordering online and telling the delivery men to bring it to different addresses and leave the items on the curb, which is against store policy, police said. The man had convinced the delivery men that he had just moved to Hoboken. In one instance he asked the delivery man to meet him at 10 Church Towers, police said.

The first delivery took place on April 5 for a total of $534.59 and a second order was placed and delivered on April 6, for $681.85, according to police reports.

A third order was placed on May 19, for $639.45, police said.

Meanwhile, PayPal had reached out to ShopRite, to tell them about the fraudulent deliveries and the Pennsylvania man whose account had been hacked, according to reports.

To prevent the third delivery to fall in the wrong hands, a police officer accompanied the ShopRite delivery man on Sunday morning, to confront the alleged thief. Around 10:15 a.m., the delivery van and the officer arrived at 917 Clinton St., the fake address the alleged thief had given.

When the officer got out of his car, the Jersey City man started running, leaving his car at Ninth and Clinton, with the keys still in the ignition, police said.

A pursuit followed, where the officer repeatedly struck the actor with his baton, but the Jersey City man ultimately got away, according to the report on the matter. In a small scuffle with the officer, the man's shirt came off and he jumped over the fence at Columbus Park, in an attempt to get away from the officer, police said. Ultimately, the alleged thief was able to get back into his car and drive off, according to the report.

The officer was able to take down the license plate and Jersey City Police was notified of the shirtless man.

Jersey City police went to the alleged thief's house, but nobody answered the door. A woman did look out the window of the apartment, police said. The man wasn't yet arrested.

He will be charged with aggravated assault on a uniformed police officer as well as theft by deception, according to the report. Hoboken police said that the 34-year-old has previously been arrested for fraud, theft and wrongful impersonation.
