Spanish Immersion Charter School Names Director

Bi-lingual assistant principal from Mahwah

The board of HoLa, the Spanish Immersion Charter School set to open in September, named an assistant principal from the Lenape Meadows School in Mahwah as its new director.

Maria Acosta, bilingual herself, was given the job by the charter school's board. Acosta began her teaching career in the early 1990s as a bilingual classroom teacher of K-8 students, according to the HoLa Board.

"Her extensive familiarity with the type of curricula that work in the elementary setting gives her a head start in creating the most effective curriculum for the Hoboken Dual Language Charter School," the HoLa Board announced.

Most of the founders of the school sit on the HoLa Board. Frank Raia, who is currently running to be on the Hoboken Board of Education, is also on the board.

"Her vision for a school that offers rigorous academics, promotes bilingualism and celebrates multiculturalism is in line with HoLa's mission," the HoLa Board also announced.

On Friday evening at 6:30, parents will be able to meet the new director at the Rue Building. On Sunday the Board hosted a Family Fun Day, which the Acosta attended. Last week a panel discussion was held.

HoLa, which already accepted its students for the coming school year with the help of a lottery in January, will start off with Kindergarten, first and second grade. A grade per year will be added until the school reached fifth grade.
