If you walk by the municipal garage and wonder what that big pile is outside, wonder no more: it's 400 ton of salt that the city can use in case of a snow storm.
With the extremely mild winter, the city still has all of its salt. During the snow storm on Oct. 29, roughly 125 ton of salt was used. The amount of salt that was used was replaced after the storm.
The outer layer of the salt has become hard because of rainfall. (its shell is like "hard candy," according to one environmental service worker). Rain doesn't cause the salt to melt or shrink, according to the Environmental Services employees at the garage.
