NEW JERSEY — NJ Transit officials warned commuters to plan for a strike on Friday. Then, shortly after midnight, the agency posted a message saying their rail service in New Jersey had been suspended.

The strike does not affect NJ Transit buses or rail services run by other agencies, such as the PATH trains, which are run by the Port Authority.

Contract negotiations between NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen failed this week, forcing commuters to make contingency plans. Operators of other transit modes in New Jersey, such as ferries and PATH, said they may increase rides.

Rideshare services may be an option, but Uber sent a note to customers Wednesday night saying they should expect more demand and higher prices.

NY Waterway ferry, which operates between Hudson and Bergen counties and Manhattan, said it would increase rides if there's a strike.

"NJ Transit has not offered cross-honoring with other transit agencies," said the city of Hoboken, advising its residents. "This means NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes will not be accepted on Amtrak, MTA, PATH, ferries, or private carrier buses. Customers using these services must purchase separate fares from those service providers."
