HOLMDEL, NJ — If you’re like many of your Holmdel neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups.

Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Holmdel area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  1. Sylvia’s Children: Founded by Holmdel resident Sylvia Allen, the organization is dedicated to improving the lives of Allen’s 1,000 adopted children at Mbiriizi Advanced Primary and Day Care School in Uganda.
  2. Monica K Young Foundation: Started in honor of Monica K Young, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in August 2021. The organization supports women and families impacted by ovarian cancer.
  3. Friendly Connections Inc.: A nonprofit family company that helps connect families and individuals with developmental disabilities with their professionals. The organization offers services such as companionship services for disabled and elderly persons, dementia patients in the NJ DDD Program and traditional mental health for all individuals.
  4. Holmdel Theatre Company: A nonprofit dedicated to providing opportunities for students and non-professionals to work with professional theatre artists in a collaborative, artistic and educational exchange.
  5. The Golden Dome Foundation: Founded in 2015 by the late Dr. Robert H. Harris and his wife, the organization is committed to enriching and improving the quality of life for people and animals by supporting organizations with demonstrable results in efforts that support their mission and focus areas (ie. health and wellness programs, education programs and animal welfare and training).
