Advanced Breast Biopsy System Now At Holmdel Bayshore Hospital
Brevera technology uses real-time X-ray imaging, among other advances, and it can be accessed at Bayshore Medical Center, Holmdel.

HOLMDEL, NJ — New technology to make breast biopsy sampling easier on the patient, with more accurate verification, is now at Hackensack Meridian Bayshore Medical Center.
The breast biopsy technology - called Hologic Brevera with CorLumina imaging - uses real-time X-ray imaging to provide faster and less invasive breast biopsy care, the hospital says.
Bayshore Medical Center is among only a few centers in New Jersey to have access to Brevera, according to the hospital.

The technology is "the world’s first and only" all-in-one, integrated breast biopsy system. It uses vacuum-assisted tissue acquisition, combined with real-time imaging, verification and advanced post-biopsy handling, experts explain.
“In the past, we would have to remove several tissue samples and then carry those samples to a different room where an X-ray would be performed to ensure that the target was retrieved,” said Denis D’Angelo, MD, breast imaging and diagnostic radiologist at Bayshore Medical Center.

“With the Brevera biopsy device, X-rays of the specimens are taken as we are sampling so that we can tell we were successful after removing only one or two core specimens,” he said.
Here are some benefits for patients being treated with the Brevera system, according to the hospital:
- Less invasive, more comfortable biopsies with fewer samples required.
- Faster, more accurate procedures due to real-time specimen verification.
- Reduced risk of bleeding.
- Improved patient experience due to shorter wait times.
"Bayshore has been at the forefront for new technology pertaining to our breast care center," said Bayshore President Caitlin Miller.
For example, Bayshore is also home to SmartCurve mammography, which is a more comfortable mammogram, the hospital has said.
And Hackensack Meridian Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank this spring announced an improved level of breast cancer detection called "contrast-enhanced mammography."
The CEM method combines the high-resolution imaging of digital mammography and 3D mammography with functional imaging provided by contrast, according to the hospital.
